Several windmills can be visited inside and contain functioning historic machinery. The sounds, movements and vibrations inside a working windmill are particularly impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Our conversations with other visitors have revealed a recurring pattern. Those who only walk through the historic houses area and visit the free shops are more likely to regard Zaanse Schans as an overly commercial tourist attraction. Visitors who enter a working windmill and learn about the region\u2019s industrial history often have a very different impression.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In our view, Zaanse Schans is worth visiting despite the large number of tourists. However, it is important not to limit your visit to wooden shoes and cheese. It is particularly suitable if you would like to enter a working windmill, photograph the well-known windmill landscape or take a comparatively short excursion from Amsterdam.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen<\/strong> provides a much more detailed impression of how people lived in the former fishing and harbour towns around the Zuiderzee. Its open-air section contains more than 140 historic buildings. Many homes, workshops, shops and public buildings can be entered and are fully furnished.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Our experience with children<\/h3>\n<p>During our visit with children, we found the Zuiderzeemuseum considerably better suited to discovering life in \u201cold Holland\u201d. The children could enter historic houses, explore workshops, try traditional games and experience everyday life in the past much more directly.<\/p>\n<p>At Zaanse Schans, the windmills and their machinery were the main attractions. The wooden shoe workshop and cheese farm are entertaining, but are more strongly geared towards visitors and retail sales. World of Windmills, by contrast, provides a more detailed introduction to the history and technology of the Zaan region.<\/p>\n<h3>Zaans Museum and Verkade Experience<\/h3>\n<p>The Zaans Museum is located near the main entrance and covers the domestic, cultural and industrial history of the region. The Verkade Experience displays historic machines and products from Verkade, the Dutch biscuit and chocolate manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>The museum is particularly suitable in poor weather or for visitors spending half or a full day at Zaanse Schans. As soon as you add a windmill or museum, however, you should allow at least one additional hour.<\/p>\n<h3>Three to four hours: suitable for most visitors<\/h3>\n<p>With three to four hours, you can visit one or two windmills, explore the free workshops, walk as far as Het Jonge Schaap and allow time for photographs and a short break.<\/p>\n<h3>Half a day or a full day: museums and a more detailed visit<\/h3>\n<p>A longer stay is worthwhile if you also want to visit the Zaans Museum, World of Windmills and several of the smaller attractions.<\/p>\n<p>During our most recent visit, we stayed from 1:00 pm until 5:30 pm. It can therefore become very busy at weekends, on public holidays and during the main travel season.<\/p>\n<h3>Early in the morning or later in the afternoon<\/h3>\n<p>Arriving early often allows you to photograph the houses and windmills before the site becomes particularly busy. The disadvantage is that some museums, shops and windmills do not open until later.<\/p>\n<p>Many organised groups leave during the later afternoon, making the paths somewhat quieter.
