What is there to see?

The Zuiderzeemuseum consists of two parts: an open-air museum (“Buitenmuseum”) and an indoor museum (“Binnenmuseum”).

#1 Open-Air Museum

Around 140 historical buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries have been reconstructed here.

Visitors stroll through a recreated fishing village with houses, workshops, shops, and a school. Many of the buildings are open to enter and are brought to life by staff in period costume – including traditional trades like coopers, sailmakers, and fish smokers.

The open-air museum is made up of several villages and includes more than 140 historic buildings in total.

Highlights include:

  • Fishing Village from Marken and Volendam: See small homes, gardens, and yards typical of the early 20th century. Copper pots still hang above the stove, and laundry flutters in the wind.
  • Steam Laundry House: An original village laundry from the time before washing machines. Visitors can watch and try out historic washing techniques.
  • Pharmacy and Colonial Goods Store: These faithfully reconstructed shops smell of soap, spices, and medicine – like stepping into a scene from an old novel.
  • School: In the old village school, slate boards sit on the desks, and children can experience a lesson from the past.
  • Sailmaker’s Loft, Cooper’s Workshop, Net-Knotting: Volunteers demonstrate historic crafts in action. Many dress in period costume and take on roles such as fishermen, merchants, or farmers, sharing stories from bygone days.
  • Smoking Huts and Eel Smokehouse: The scent of smoked fish is in the air – a reminder of the region’s fishing heritage. Tastings are often available

Many of the buildings can be entered. Volunteer staff play historical roles – you might see a couple sitting down for dinner. This is a place where both children and adults can experience, smell, and touch history.

Craftspeople work in authentic workshops. There’s plenty to learn directly from them.

#2 Indoor Museum

The indoor section (“Binnenmuseum”) is open year-round and showcases exhibits on regional shipping, folk culture, and everyday life in Zuiderzee times. Notable highlights include:

  • Ship Hall featuring 13 original vessels that once sailed the Zuiderzee, including three large fishing boats and the boeier Sperwe
  • Models of traditional sailing ships
  • Interactive maps showing the changing coastline
  • Regional clothing and traditional costumes
  • Everyday objects, from kitchen tools to children’s toys

In the Ship Hall of the Binnenmuseum, 13 original boats are on display.

Visiting the Zuiderzeemuseum with Children and Families

Our Experience

The Zuiderzeemuseum is perfect for a family outing. Children engage with history in a playful and interactive way – through hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and historic games. Many volunteers are especially attentive to younger visitors, explaining tools or inviting them to participate.

Additional highlights for kids include:

  • Treasure hunts through the village
  • Traditional games like stilt-walking and hoop rolling
  • Summer programs with bread baking, rope making, and craft activities
  • Petting zoo with chickens, goats, and ducks
  • Baby changing facilities and child-friendly restaurants

Strollers are welcome, but due to cobblestone paths and wooden walkways, we recommend a rugged or all-terrain buggy.

History of the Zuiderzeemuseum – Why the Zuiderzee No Longer Exists

The Zuiderzeemuseum commemorates life around the former Zuiderzee, a large inland sea that shaped vast areas of what is now the Netherlands until 1932.

  • With the construction of the Afsluitdijk (Closure Dam), the Zuiderzee was cut off from the North Sea and transformed into the IJsselmeer.
  • As a result, many fishing villages lost their economic foundation. The museum preserves the culture, crafts, and traditions of this vanished world.
  • The Zuiderzeemuseum was founded in 1948. The open-air museum opened in 1983 and features historic buildings from places such as Marken, Volendam, and Urk, some of which were saved from demolition.
